Pencil drawing of the Krell Door from the Science Fiction motion picture The Forbidden Planet
The Krell Door from The Forbidden Planet, Pencil on paper, 11" x 14"
Perhaps the greatest door that was ever designed is the Krell Door from the classic Science Fiction Motion Picture "The Forbidden Planet" staring Walter Pidgeon, Ann Francis, and Leslie Nielsen.

In the classic Science Fiction film "The Forbidden Planet" there was a port of entry into the realm of the Krell, the superior race long extinct on Planet Alter IV. This port of entry was a wondrous laboratory that held all the mysteries and secrets of the Krell and the only point of access to the laboratory was through the great Krell Door!

The Krell door is pentagon in shape and is set at approximately 94 degree angles centered at the very top and again at each side. The side angles of the door are one quarter of the entire height of the door up from the base from which they then run towards the top and base to complete the pentagon shape. These proportions are so unique and so flawless in conception and design that I will state that its creation is one of the greatest design achievements in history. The experience of beholding the image of the Krell door is awe-inspiring and is seldom match by any. Further enhancing the awe and mystery of the Krell door are the four panels of pure Krell metal that open when the combination is unlocked. The first panel rises from the base through the top. The second and third panels simultaneously open from the left and the right each having the 94 degree angle complimenting the side it recedes into. This action has an effect of a diaphragm opening at the center adding to the awe of the experience. Finally the last panel rises from the base clear through to the top and can be seen rising while the right and left panels open from the center. All four panels are in motion simultaneously making the experience unforgettable.

Like a Mozart symphony one keeps coming back to draw more from of it and acquire further inspiration. So too with the Krell door for time has only paid homage to this great image. When you look at it today it is as magnificent and awe-inspiring now as it was when it was first created in 1956!
