Watercolor painting of Willis Tower formerly Sears Tower in Chicago
Willis Tower Chicago, Watercolor, 11" x 14"

Perhaps the most famous building in the world and certainly the most famous in Chicago is the towering giant Willis Tower, formerly known as Sears Tower. This mammoth structure was started in the early 1970's by Sears Roebuck & Company as the new office  headquarters. For years they were located on Homan Avenue on Chicago's west side but due to need for more space they decided to build a new world-class office building. Originally Sears was going to build two towers, one 40 stories and the other 60 adjacent to each other in a large plaza. The idea occurred to them to combine the two towers into one larger building to more efficiently use space, the result was to build the tallest building in the world and it held that record for over 25 years.

Willis Tower has 109 floors and is 1,454 feet tall and houses over 10,000 people. You may notice that there are no indentations on the building until the 50th floor when the first of the nine core towers sets itself in. Sears designed the building so that the first 50 floors were to be utilized by Sears and the remaining floors were to be rented out. Thus there was no need to have such vast floor spaces on the higher levels.
