This is a view of Chicago taken from the front of the Adler Planetarium to the south east of the downtown, a very popular angle to view the city from. I have done a watercolor of Chicago from this same angle (Chicago Skyline 1-16) but on an over cast day which held pack the light so as to permit a reflection. In this watercolor the sky is bright and the water is blue permitting a wonderful reflection of the skyline.

Unlike the watercolor 1-16 this work or art makes use of rulers to make for perfect vertical lines. These can be clearly seen in the Aon Center, Willis Tower, and Trump Tower as well as many others when you look closely. My intention was to give a more architectonic look to the watercolor, almost like an architectural rending but with much greater freedom of line work. The colors here are crisp and clear as is the line work and they beautifully show the city at its best.

In the reflection of the skyline you can see the use of both pen & ink as well as brush strokes to show the imagery of the buildings through the water. The trees that form a skirt along the edge of the shoreline make a nice buffer between the actual skyline and its reflection in the water. I have made the horizon line 2/3 up from the center so as not to divide the image into upper and lower sections visually. The water has a mix of yellow, blues, and greens to accommodate the refraction of light from the sky in the water. These tones are pervasive throughout the work and have a sense of continuity to the painting.
