At the intersection of Adams Street and the Chicago River stands this marvelous bridge house. The Chicago River loops around the central business district and this is where the nickname "Chicago Loop" first came from then later it was reinforced by the elevated trains that make a complete circle around the central business district, thus the term loop. At every street crossing the Chicago River there is a drawbridge, in fact Chicago has more working drawbridge than any other city in the world. At the intersection of the river and the street stands a small bridge house for the captain to run and maintain the bridge. There is a bridge house at ever intersection in the "loop" and there are four at Michigan Avenue and the Chicago River. The bridge house that is shown here is located on the southwest corner of the Chicago River and Adams Street. The 19th Century French Revival Architecture is most charming as an accent to the city scene.

In drawing the house I wanted to have it positioned in a commanding angle so as to showcase the beauty of the structure. Being a native Chicagoan I have walked by these houses all of my life and now this is the first time that I have made art of them. My focus here was to have strong bold lines so I used a medium pen point to give me the desired affect. If you look closely you will see a bold outline of the building so as to give definition and continuity to the structure. The roof is the most please part of the building for me and I much enjoyed working the lovely detail that is all around it.
