Watercolor Painting of Seattle Skyline on Elliot Bay
Pen & Ink drawings of Seattle skyline on Elliot Bay

The city of Seattle is blessed with being situated in one of the most picturesque and beautiful vistas in the world. Gently resting on the Elliott Bay Seattle is home to some of the finest architecture in the country including the world-famous Space Needle which was build for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. The Space needle is the most visited tourist site in Seattle with over 20,000 people attending each day.

As an artist I have taken to express the beauty of the Seattle skyline in four medium; watercolors, pen & ink, pencil, and oils. The most popular artwork for skylines is the watercolor. The reason for this is that the medium is transparent and lets you work with mixed media to add dimension to the work. For example, often in my watercolors I make use of different colored inks with pen such as black, sepia, and red. However, the real beauty of watercolor is it's loose and expressive manner in which I can covey the sense of the scenery. Following watercolors pen & ink drawings are very much in demand. As with watercolors I use a number of color inks to express certain moods of the time of day in the cityscape. Pencil drawings are interesting in that they make use of gradual change in tone unlike the pen & ink, which requires cross-hatching to make these changes. The pencil drawings are wonderful because they allow for such rich change in tones and bring out wonderful contrasts. Oils are of course a very popular medium for skyline paintings. However, the one difficulty with oil that the other media do not have is the line, for in oils you have only the brush to work with whereas even with watercolors you can introduce pen & ink. The compensating reward for oil cityscapes is its wonderful ability to radiate rich tone of color throughout a canvas with deep hues that always draw attention.

It is a pleasure to do cityscapes of Seattle because of her innovative architecture and fabulous vistas.
